X Factor 2010: Shock as former bookies favourite Aiden Grimshaw leaves after losing the public vote to Katie Waissel

Shock exit: Aiden Grimshaw became the eighth act to leave this year's X Factor are losing the public vote to Katie Waissel

He's been one of the bookies favourites since the show started, but Aiden Grimshaw was sensationally voted off The X Factor last night.

Despite going head-to-head with controversial contestant Katie Waissel in the sing-off, Aiden received the lowest amount of public votes.

The 18-year-old left the show after it was taken to deadlock for the first time this series after the judges were split 50/50 between who to save.

Looking visibly upset after finding out his fate, he said: 'You win some, you lose some.

'My friend texted me earlier and said there was a leak on Twitter that I was third from bottom.'

Despite Aiden's Twitter remarks, an X Factor spokesman insisted no one knew the outcome of the public vote until seconds before it was announced by host Dermot O'Leary.

An X Factor spokesman said: ‘People make lots of unfounded predictions on the internet about the order of the contestants based on various popularity polls. We do not believe there is a leak.’

When O'Leary asked Grimshaw what he wanted to do next, he replied: 'Have a beer,' before hugging his mentor Dannii Minogue.

Writing on her Twitter later on, Dannii said: 'My utmost respect to Aiden. I have loved working with him on X Factor. TeamMinogue will miss him I and wish him the VERY BEST! Dx.'

In the sing-off, the Blackpool native performed Crowded House's Don't Dream It's Over, while former receptionist Waissel, 24, sang Christina Aguilera's Save Me From Myself.

After being in the sing-off three times previously, Katie obviously thought it would be her and was stunned when she learned Aiden was leaving.

Louis Walsh was the last of the judges to vote, bringing it to deadlock by joining Dannii to save her act Aiden, while Simon sided with Cheryl Cole's act Katie.

Walsh said: 'It's really difficult one. I'm going to save the person I think has the most to give in the competition. The person I'm sending home is Katie.'

A stunned Paije Richardson was the last act to know he was safe until next week and shouted 'what?' before growing visibly emotional with relief.

Immediately after the show, devastated members of One Direction vented their fury on Twitter at Aiden's exit.

Louis Tomlinson wrote: 'Not only was he one of my best friends, he was one of the best singers in the competition, yet people who can't sing a note in tune are still here. Wow.'

Safe for another week: Paije Richardson, 19, couldn't believe he was through to next week after he was told by Simon Cowell he wouldn't win the show the previous night

His bandmate Liam Pyane added: 'Aiden didn't deserve that.'

Aiden's exit came after a stormy performance show on Saturday night when the judges attracted more attention than the actual contestants.

The male judges started clashing from the first act Paije Richardson's performance and Simon warned Louis 'you're going to get removed from the building if you keep talking like that' after he said Katie Waissel had given a 'throwaway performance'.

Back together: Take That (L-R: Gary Barlow, Jason Orange, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Robbie Williams) performed as a five-piece for the first time in 15 years

It wasn't just Simon and Louis clashing, even Dannii turned on her usual partner-in-crime by covering his mouth with her hand after he labelled Paije as 'bad karaoke'.

Sunday's results show also saw the return of X Factor 2008 runner-ups JLS, who dashed to Fountain Studios in Wembley from Hammersmith Apollo after performing at the BBC Radio 1 Teen Radio Awards earlier that evening.

The four-piece, comprising of Aston Merrygold, Jonathan 'JB' Gill, Oritse Williams and Marvin Humes, performed their new single Love You More, of which sales proceeds will go to Children In Need.

Also performing was Irish boy band Westlife with their new song Stay, but the biggest cheers of the night were for Take That as a reunited five piece with Robbie Williams.

Their X Factor set marked the first time they performed as a five piece since Robbie quit the group 15 years ago.

Looking happy to be back together as a five-piece, Robbie, Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Jason Orange smiled at each other as they sang their latest single The Flood.
