Kate-crasher Perry gives high school students surprise of a lifetime by turning up at their prom

California Girl: Katy Perry gatecrashed a school prom in Melbourne, Australia

The average high school prom consists of pretty dresses, slow dances and spiked punch.

But for one group of very lucky and surprised students in Melbourne, Australia, their bash will be a night they will never forget after getting a very special guest - Katy Perry.

The singer, who has been on a tour round the Asia-Pacific, was staying at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne and returned to the hotel to the sound of her hit California Gurls playing in one of the ballrooms.

The 25-year-old star decided to investigate and walked straight into the middle of the all-male Melbourne High School's formal dance.

Rather than leave after that, Katy grabbed a microphone and sang the rest of the song

She even did a version of Beyonce's Single Ladies, dancing a routine with some of the boys before being whisked away by her minders.

'Everyone went nuts and it was the perfect ending to our evening,' said one party goer.

Katy, who is currently in Japan promoting her new album, later tweeted about her experience saying: ' I totes just crashed a prom!'

But while students were excited about Perry's appearance, one teacher was confused by the whole thing.

'First I'm thinking, "who is this silly girl?'Who is this idiot?'"' she told a local TV channel.
