Quick change Katie Holmes parades in red, black and purple as she films fresh scenes as Jackie Kennedy

Suited and booted: Katie Holmes wore a black and red suit on the set of The Kennedys in Toronto, Canada, yesterday

She was known for being one of the most fashion forward women of her time, so it's no wonder Katie Holmes is enjoying filming her role as Jackie Kennedy in a new TV mini-series.

The 31-year-old actress had an extremely colourful day on set in Toronto, Canada, yesterday as she donned a red and black suit for scenes in the morning, before changing into a purple maternity coat to film scenes with co-star Greg Kinnear in the afternoon.

Holmes has been shooting scenes for the miniseries since early June, and said recently she is thoroughly enjoying starring as someone as iconic as Kennedy - if only for the clothes she gets to wears.

Smart: The actress said recently she has enjoyed playing Kennedy because of her amazing clothes

She told US Weekly magazine: 'It's been really fun! Her clothes were magnificent. I feel so lucky'

'We have these wonderful seamstresses who are creating beautiful dresses that are obviously replicas of real things she wore. Armani made two dresses for me to wear.'

'She not only had great style, but she was an artist and a writer. She was an illustrator. She was an editor.

'Her great style was both appropriate for every event that she went to and also classic, and also things that were wearable. I feel really lucky to be playing her.'

Getting ready: Katie gets a make-up touch up as she and co-star Greg Kinnear, who is playing former U.S. President John F Kennedy, prepare to film their scene

Pretty in purple: Katie later changed out of her red and black outfit and into a long purple maternity coat

Among the outfits Katie has been wearing on set are the pale blue dress Kennedy wore when she was pregnant, and the iconic pink and black suit with pink pillarbox hat she wore the day her husband John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.

The role of Kennedy is the first real-life person Katie has played since she shot to fame as Joey Potter in hit U.S. TV miniseries Dawson's Creek.

And while it is a change for the actress, she admitted recently she often seeks acting advice from her husband Tom Cruise to ensure she is fully prepared for her roles.

Paparazzi: JFK and Jackie Kennedy were the most famous couple of their time, and were often chased by photographers wherever they went

She told New York magazine: 'Well, we do collaborate on everything at home. But I mean, he's Tom Cruise! His body of work is incredible.

'Every movie he's done has done really well. I look back, and everything's a classic.

'I definitely come home and say to him, "So, imagine a scene ... how would you play it?" And he's helpful and sweet and gracious. He's quite an incredible human being.'

The Kennedys, an eight-hour miniseries, is set to air on The History Channel next year and covers the rise of the Kennedy family's political dynasty.
