Troubled Burt Reynolds has slashed the price of his Florida estate by $7 million.

The 74-year-old actor, who in March underwent quintuple heart bypass surgery, has been trying to sell the magnificent water-front mansion for almost five years.

It was originally listed for just under $16 million but this week the price has fallen to a new low of $8,995,0000.

The house, overlooking Jupiter Island, is set in three acres and comes with its own dock, private cinema complex - and even its own hair salon.

The star of Smokey and the Bandit, , who is still recuperating from his heart operation, last year checked himself into a rehab clinic for treatment for addiction to prescription pain killers.

Doctors advised Reynolds, also known for his roles in Deliverance and Boogie Nights, to treat his addiction as they were concerned about the effects on his mental health.

The situation escalated when he was found slumped in his house in Hobe Sound, Florida, a wealthy beachside community north of Palm Beach County.

Reynolds’ manager Erik Kritzer said the actor had become hooked on painkillers after using them to control pain from back surgery.

‘Mr Reynolds felt he was going through hell and after a while, realised he was a prisoner of prescription pain pills,’ Mr Kritzer said.

‘He checked himself into rehab in order to regain control of his life.’

In 1990 Reynolds confessed to a reliance on a sleeping drug after he used it to ease the pain of a jaw injury.

Barely able to eat, he lost 50lb, leading to false rumours that he had Aids.

It had a devastating effect on his career. ‘For two years I couldn’t get a job,’ he said at the time.

‘I did action pictures because I was trying to prove that I was well.’

He became a star with Deliverance in 1972 after years of TV and movie work.

More hits followed but by the end of the 1980s his star had waned and in 1996 he filed for bankruptcy.

He made a comeback with 1997’s Boogie Nights, winning a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination.
