Trip to the flicks: Kate Winslet shields her son Joe from the cameras as she takes him to the cinema in New York
She has hardly been seen in public since announcing her split from husband Sam Mendes.
But yesterday Kate Winslet braved the cameras as she and her son Joe left their New York apartment to go to the cinema.
The actress, 34, hid behind big dark sunglasses and clutched her six-year-old boy close to her as she ran into a waiting car.
Joe is Kate's son with estranged husband Sam, 44, her separation from whom she announced from last month after almost seven years of marriage.
She also has a daughter, nine-year-old Mia, from her first marriage to assistant director Jim Threapleton.
Kate, who was dressed down in denim shorts, lace-free sneakers and a blue jumper, was expressionless as she left the Manhattan apartment she shared with Mendes, only raising a smile as she greeted a friend.

The triplex property, where they lived for six years, is in the city's affluent Chelsea district and is said to have been put on the market for £3.9million.
Sam is believed to be living in an office that he has in the building, while Kate and the two children have remained in the three-bedroom, three-storey flat at the top of the building.
She has spoken of her desire to move back to England to be closer to friends and family, but has been staying in Manhattan while she films Mildred Pierce, a mini series for the HBO channel.

The five-part series is based on the the 1941 Jame M. Cain novel about a woman who leaves her unemployed husband and re-builds her life.
Kate has maintained a dignified silence since her split from Sam, but on Saturday, the Daily Mail's Katie Nicholl reported that she is angry that he has got back in touch with his ex- girlfriend Rachel Weisz.
Sam has been widely tipped to direct the new James Bond movie and, according to industry sources, is determined to cast Rachel, 40, as one of the villains.
Casual: Kate is snapped leaving her apartment on her own in denim shorts and lace-free sneakers
A source said: 'As soon as Kate and Sam split, he was on the phone asking Rachel if she was interested in doing the movie.
'Rachel has always been persona non grata in the Winslet-Mendes household, and Kate went ballistic when she heard that Sam wanted to hire her.
'Sam has wanted to work with Rachel for ages, but Kate would not allow it. Although they ran in the same Hollywood circles, they avoided each other.'
